What can a McKenzie Friend do in court?

A McKenzie Friend can assist a litigant in person by helping them prepare paperwork, take notes in court, and offer quiet advice during hearings. They cannot speak on your behalf (unless the judge gives permission), file court documents for you, or act as a solicitor or barrister. Their role is supportive, not representative.

Do McKenzie Friends need legal qualifications?

No, McKenzie Friends are not required to have legal qualifications, but many have practical experience with the court system — some through personal involvement, others through training. It is important to choose someone who understands the limits of the role and follows court rules and judicial guidance.

Is it better to use a McKenzie Friend or a solicitor?

That depends on your case and budget. A solicitor is legally qualified and can represent you in court. A McKenzie Friend is a cost-effective alternative if you are representing yourself. They cannot give legal advice, but they can offer emotional support, practical guidance, and court preparation help, especially in family law matters.
